Are you in need of a second chance? Are you willing to give someone a second chance even if you feel like they don’t deserve it?
There’s so much power that comes from receiving and giving someone a second chance. We’ve heard stories that we wouldn’t have ever heard about if a second chance wasn’t given. There was a man named John Mark that traveled with Barnabas and Paul sharing the gospel but at some point during the process he decided to leave them which later caused friction between Barnabas and Paul because of it.
Barnabas was willing to give him a second chance but Paul refused because he had abandoned them before.
Acts 15:36-40 NIV
36 Some time later Paul said to Barnabas, “Let us go back and visit the believers in all the towns where we preached the word of the Lord and see how they are doing.” 37 Barnabas wanted to take John, also called Mark, with them, 38 but Paul did not think it wise to take him, because he had deserted them in Pamphylia and had not continued with them in the work. 39 They had such a sharp disagreement that they parted company. Barnabas took Mark and sailed for Cyprus, 40 but Paul chose Silas and left, commended by the believers to the grace of the Lord.
Barnabas willingness to give Mark a second chance had to encourage him. It had to make him feel good that Barnabas wasn’t willing to give up on him even if Paul had. Mark’s opportunity from Barnabas to prove faithful didn’t go unnoticed by Paul eventually benefiting Paul, everyone who came in contact with him and more importantly it helped advance the gospel.
2 Timothy 4:11 (NIV)
11 Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, because he is helpful to me in my ministry.
I’m grateful for a wife and children that have given me second chances when I’ve made mistakes and opportunities to right my wrongs. I’m even more grateful and thankful for (a God of a second chance. A God who has given me chances just like he gave Moses, Rahab, David, Peter, Matthew, Saul/Paul and all of us and he did it with one verse.
John 3:16 (NIV)
16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
What’s holding you back from giving your spouse, children, parents, family, friends, co-workers, your-self or God a second chance?
Nothing held back Jesus from giving you one. He’s a God of a second chance.
