So many times we sit around debating or arguing about things based on our opinions or how we feel. But here’s something we need to understand when it comes to these types of arguments and debates. We can argue opinions and feelings all day long but one thing that’s not arguable is scriptural truth. We can argue or debate about things like what color we prefer best or what food we prefer because our opinions. But when we talk about things related to life according to Gods word like is it ok for a spouse that feel they have the right to withhold something from their spouse out of anger, someone may say it’s ok to be physically intimate outside of marriage, someone may say that it’s ok to get drunk and so on and we could argue things just like these back and forth but once we pull out the scriptures to see Gods view in regards to them then there’s nothing to argue why? Because Gods word trumps our feelings and opinions and if we’re followers of Christ who should we listen to? God why? Because his word says the truth which is his word will set you free.
John 8:32 (NIV)
32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
Being free is the last thing Satan wants us to be. He tells us lies trying to get us to base our feelings and opinions on how we feel even as Christians allowing certain untruth to fit in with partial truth. That’s exactly what he did to Eve in the garden. He told her a lie mixed in with partial truth and she fell right into his trap. Lets take a look real quick at these verses so I can show you what I’m talking about.
3 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” (Causing Eve to question what God truly said.)
2 The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’”
4 “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. 5 “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” (Partial truth)
6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. (Her eyes were opened as you see here just like he had told her. Their eyes were open to things they weren’t aware of but he didn’t tell her the whole truth of what would take place.)
Satan is the master of lies and nothing in him is truth.
44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
So we can’t allow him to deceive us and the only way we can do that is comparing what-ever he says or what someone else say and compare it to truth which is the word of God. If it doesn’t line up with Gods word then we know it’s not truth and if our actions are contradicting truth then we need to reconsider what we are doing, especially if we are followers of Christ. Me must listen to the voice of truth and be guided by it.
