Today across the world, many children will be born. Some parents will already have a name decided for their child. Others will still be trying to decide on a name for their child, even after they have already been born. Most of the parents will be trying to pick a name that has a meaning. A name that stands for something. In the end the kids will get a name decided by their parents. Some will like their names and some will dislike their name. The question I have though, is are you willing to give up your earthly name given by your parents. Are you willing to give up the person you once were and except a new name and new identity? Are you willing to be like Jacob?
Genesis 32:24-28-So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak. When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man. Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.” But Jacob replied, “I WILL NOT LET YOU GO UNLESS YOU BLESS ME.” The man asked him, “What is your name?” “Jacob,” he answered. THEN THE MAN SAID, “YOUR NAME WILL NO LONGER BE JACOB, BUT ISRAEL, BECAUSE YOU HAVE STRUGGLED WITH GOD AND WITH HUMANS AND HAVE OVERCOME.”
What I find so amazing is once Jacob realized who he was fighting with, he refused to let go!!!! He refused to let go without God’s blessing. Before this fight, Jacob didn’t consider God as his own. He would refer to him as the God of Abraham and Issac his grandfather and his father. Once he accepted God as his own. His name changed and his identity changed and he was given a new name and identity. The old Jacob we once and he once knew died. When the new Jacob was created, something from his fight with God that was with him forever, that reminded him of his fight with God was his limp. Every time he walked, he was reminded of this awesome event that took place in his life.
So the question for you today is this. Once you find Christ, are you willing to allow him to change your name and your identity as you know it today for a new one? And once you find him, are you willing to refuse to let him go no matter what?
Lord I pray in your name, that your people be willing to except a name change. I pray that we willing to die to our old selves and take own the new us in you. Lord I also pray that if someone is reading this and doesn’t know you that they come to know you. I pray that they except you into their life, asking you to forgive them of their sins and accept that you have forgiven them, and that they believe that you died for their sins, and that you rose on the third day in Jesus name AMEN!!!
