WHEN PRIDE GETS IN THE WAY

Why do we hear stories of people who came from nothing maybe being poor or come from a family that was not educated. But by Gods grace on their life, they achieve some pretty amazing things in their life only to hear in the news or in the paper of their down fall or destruction. Well in most cases when you look deep down to it there is always some pride and arrogance that contributes to their down fall. They began to think to much of themselves and their own abilities most times forgetting that God has put them in the position they are in. So in other words they forget God. Just like today there where many people in the bible that fell because of their pride.

Samson one of the Judges in  the Book of Judges fell because of his pride.  He was strong and handsome and he felt like no one could take him or challenge him. Only for him to fall at the hand of a woman. King Saul fell because of his pride and his inability to listen to others advice because of his power and authority as king.  2 Chronicles 26:16 But after Uzziah became powerful, his pride led to his downfall. He was unfaithful to the Lord his God, and entered the temple of the Lord to burn incense on the altar of incense. Nebuchadnezzar Daniel 5:20 But when his heart became arrogant and hardened with pride, he was deposed from his royal throne and stripped of his glory. Then there is Rehoboam the son of King Solomon who well for the same reason.

1 Kings 12:6-15 Then King Rehoboam consulted the elders who had served his father Solomon during his lifetime. “How would you advise me to answer these people?” he asked. They replied, “If today you will be a servant to these people and serve them and give them a favorable answer, they will always be your servants.”But Rehoboam rejected the advice the elders gave him and consulted the young men who had grown up with him and were serving him. He asked them, “What is your advice? How should we answer these people who say to me, ‘Lighten the yoke your father put on us’?”10 The young men who had grown up with him replied, “These people have said to you, ‘Your father put a heavy yoke on us, but make our yoke lighter.’ Now tell them, ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist. 11 My father laid on you a heavy yoke; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions.’”12 Three days later Jeroboam and all the people returned to Rehoboam, as the king had said, “Come back to me in three days.” 13 The king answered the people harshly. Rejecting the advice given him by the elders, 14 he followed the advice of the young men and said, “My father made your yoke heavy; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions.” 15 So the king did not listen to the people, for this turn of events was from the Lord, to fulfill the word the Lord had spoken to Jeroboam son of Nebat through Ahijah the Shilonite. King Rehoboam was eventually over thrown and killed because of his prideful ways.

God clearly gives us several warnings of thinking to highly of ourselves and being prideful. Proverbs 11:2  When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom. Proverbs 16:18  Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall. Psalms 10: 4- In his pride the wicked man does not seek him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God. Luke 1:52  He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. So what does he requires us to do. James 4:  10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. Ephesians 4: Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Philippians 2: Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves. Colossians 3: 12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. So what do these verses teach us all? They teach us if we think to much of ourselves, and put others below us because of our financial status/cultural status/social status, and think that we created all our blessings for ourselves, then we should not be surprised, when that down fall comes, when God regains our attention!!! So we must all remain humble!
