At some point in our life I believe we all could remember a time when we were either used or taken advantaged of for someone elses gain. During that time there’s a good chance we didn’t even realize it. It could have taken us years to realize it but we eventually came to a point were we recognized it. There also could of been a time when we either used or taken advantage of someone for our own purpose.
As I write this I can remember a time when I was younger looking up to an older guy. I thought this guy was pretty cool and I wanted to be his friend. He was around the same age as my older sister. I remember him asking me a lot of questions about her. We began to talk often and he asked me to introduce him to my sister. So I introduced him to her like he had asked.
When I did that I noticed he didn’t talk to me as much anymore. When my sister stopped communicating with him often he stopped talking to me completely. Eventually I realized that he really never was interested in being my friend. He just wanted to get close to my sister and I was the way for him to do it. We can look at this story and use it in many ways.
This goes on everyday in the world. It happens in Corporate America were one might use someone to obtain a job or ect. This been going on for centuries and there are many stories in the bible just like this we will go into. The good news though is that we’re given examples on how we can overcome this issue. We are going to start from the beginning of time with Genesis.
Genesis 3:1-7 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”2 The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’”4 “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. 5 “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.” Here Eve was clearly being used and taken advantage of without even knowing it. Satan used her to get what he wanted and when he was done, did you notice that he didn’t stick around with her as she was punished.
Exodus 32:1-7 When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said, “Come, make us gods[a] who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don’t know what has happened to him.”2 Aaron answered them, “Take off the gold earrings that your wives, your sons and your daughters are wearing, and bring them to me.” 3 So all the people took off their earrings and brought them to Aaron. 4 He took what they handed him and made it into an idol cast in the shape of a calf, fashioning it with a tool. Then they said, “These are your gods,[b] Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.”5 When Aaron saw this, he built an altar in front of the calf and announced, “Tomorrow there will be a festival to the Lord.” 6 So the next day the people rose early and sacrificed burnt offerings and presented fellowship offerings. Afterward they sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.7 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go down, because your people, whom you brought up out of Egypt, have become corrupt. 8 They have been quick to turn away from what I commanded them and have made themselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf. They have bowed down to it and sacrificed to it and have said, ‘These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.’ Here the Israelites were impatient and because of their impatient’s and Aaron being the next person in command they used him to make them Gods. It never came to Aaron’s mind that he was being used to do something that was clearly against God and they didn’t seem to care if it affected him or not.
In the Book of Mark in chapter 15 we clearly see how Pilate was used by the chief priest and the elders to crucify Jesus and even though he knew it he still did it anyway. Mark 15: 9-10 “Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?” asked Pilate, knowing it was out of envy that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him.” There are many other stories like this. King Solomon was used to build temples for false gods for his wives. David used Joab to do his dirty work and kill Uriah. Jezebel used her husbands Ahab’s name and seal to write letters to have Naboth killed to steal his vineyard. Haman used King Xerxes signet ring to write a decree to have all the Jews killed. The chief priest used Judas to betray Jesus. Now lets look at how Jesus handled his situation.
Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ”5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. 6 “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written:“‘He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’ 7 Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.” 8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9 “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’ 11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him. Jesus recognized when he was being tempted.
We also like Jesus with the help of God will be able to recognize when we are being used. I will leave you on this thought. If someone walked up to you today and said, hey I want to use you to meet someone or I want to use you to get a job then once I get what I want, I want nothing to do with you. I also don’t care how much pain it causes you because it’s not about you it’s all about me. How would you respond to that person?
Well that’s what happens everyday and exactly what Satan is saying when we allow him to use us to get angry at someone else, gossip about someone or be envious, unforgiving, and so on. Once he gets what he wants from you and all the damage is done, he leaves and is nowhere to be found. Until another opportune time. So don’t let Satan take advantage of you or use you to do his dirty work!!!!!
